Online Horse Race Betting Basics
Win – Place – Show bets are just what they sound like. A WIN bet is a bet that the horse you select will win the race. A PLACE bet is a bet that the horse you select will finish in either first or second place (doubling your chances of winning, but paying less). A SHOW bet is a bet that the horse you select will finish in either first, second, or third place, again a still more conservative bet and therefore while easier to win, lower to payout.
In an EXACTA bet you have to pick the two horses that will win first and second place and you have to select when you bet which place each of the two horses will take. In other words, if you select the right two horses, but the one you thought would come in second came in first and the one you thought came in first came in second, you lose.
An EXACTA BOX then is taking those same two horses, without needing to predict which place each one will take, so long as they both place. You can also add more horses to the Exacta Box, increasing your chances of winning, but at much greater cost—essentially cutting your potential winnings in half every time your cost for the bet doubles.
A TRIFECTA and a TRIFECTA BOX, then, are similar to an Exacta and an Exacta Box, respectively, except instead of picking just the two horses to win and place, you’re picking the three horses to win, place, and show.
